Proper care for your New Humidor
Fine cigars mature like fine wines; in fact they will continue to improve for up to their first 15 years….. but they do require a little basic care.
Your humidor comes complete with a quality humidifier, digital temperature/relative humidity gauge and proper solution so you can properly monitor and treat the conditions inside your humidor.
Even though the interior of your humidor has been crafted from kiln dried Spanish Cedar, we recommend that it be “seasoned” before storing cigars. “Seasoning” acclimates the interior of the humidor to approx 65-72% humidity. The following steps should be performed prior to use for the initial seasoning or charge.
1. Remove and fill humidity device with either humidification solution or pure distilled water. Do not use regular tap water or bacteria may develop inside of your humidor. Humidification solution is the best solution for your humidor because it contains a mixture of distilled water, polyglycol and a mould inhibiter and will maintain that your humidor is kept at 70% relative humidity (+/-2%)
2. Use a fresh sponge or soft cloth with the solution and wipe down the complete interior of the humidor, making sure not to completely soak the wood.
3. Lay a plastic bag on the floor of the humidor interior and place the damp sponge/cloth on top of the bag. This will help raise the humidity in the box initially.
4. Remove the humidifier element from the lid and while holding it (over a sink), fill it with humidifier solution making sure it is has absorbed maximum amount of fluid.
5. Close the lid and leave undisturbed for at least 12-24 hours.
6. Open the humidor; remove the sponge and plastic bag from the humidor and refill the humidification devise
8. Close lid and leave undisturbed for another 12-24 hours, insuring the interior wood has a raised level of humidity sufficient to begin storing cigars.
Storage
Try to store your humidor in a location were the temperatures range between 66F and 70F, and never store your humidor in direct sunlight. The humidor is made to keep humidity levels up near 70%. When the humidity falls, make sure there is solution in the humidifier (this will need to be checked every 3-4 months once the initial humidity is reached and has stabilized). Be sure to not let the humidity reach over 75% or rotting may occur. Simply adjust the humidifier mechanism to slow down the rate or open the box for a period of time.
Cigars need fresh air! Be sure to open your humidor periodically and be sure to rotate the cigars. For best results, rotate the cigars at the end of each week, from the bottom layer of the humidor to the top layer of the humidor and so on. Try to avoid any unnecessary opening and closing of your humidor lid (except for regular care) this will prevent the humidity from escaping.
Cleaning
Always use a soft cloth when cleaning the exterior of your humidor. Your humidor has a hand rubbed oil finish that is very durable, but you may use a quality furniture polish if cleaning is necessary. Simple regular dustings will help keep your humidor looking as good as new
